Children’s Sunday School

Pre-K through 5th Grade

PreK & Kindergarten (3 year olds – Kindergarten)

For toddlers through kindergarteners, our goal is to help children feel connected to our church family through the establishment of caring relationships with adults other than parents. We hope that they begin to understand God’s love in a tangible way through the lessons and their teachers.

In September, children new to the PreK class receive a Frolic First Bible.

1st & 2nd  Grades

For 1st– 2nd graders, we begin to build a Biblical and elementary theological foundation through Bible stories, crafts, and opportunities to act out the stories.

3rd Grade

Our 3rd graders are part of a Bible explorers program designed to help them learn about the NEW Bibles they receive as gifts from the church in September.

The children discover all the different parts of the Bible and learn how to look up scriptures. Through games and activities, they learn the books of the Bible and which ones are in the Old and New Testaments. Our 3rd graders are part of a Bible explorers program designed to help them learn about the NEW Bibles they receive as gifts from the church in September.

4th & 5th Grades

Through discussions and creative expression, the 4th and 5th graders increase their knowledge and understanding of Bible stories and lessons we can learn from each. The activities reinforce the books of the Bible sequence learned in 3rd grade.

Curriculum

We currently use a lectionary based curriculum from Spark House. The children enjoy age appropriate stories and hands-on activities each week.

Spark Activate Faith is Bible-centered programming at its best and each lesson is broken into four components. During Gather, kids enjoy a welcoming activity and prayer. In Open the Bible, they explore a story together in their Bibles. Then, in Activate Faith, kids experience creative activities which integrate Bible learning with everyday life. Finally, a Send activity and prayer close the lesson. Children leave class with Faith on the Go activities to use with their families throughout the week.

Additional Sunday School Information

  • We are very sensitive to the dietary needs (food allergies, food intolerances and vegetarian) of everyone at Fairport UMC. Our nursery space is a food-free environment and in general, no food is served during Sunday school (grades PreK-5th) except for special events.
  • This year the classes add pom-poms to the class jar with the completion of different tasks (Attendance, bringing their Bible, memorizing a prayer/scripture). When a class reaches 100 pompoms, they have a class party.
  • We encourage parents to attend the Adult Forum Sunday school class or use the hour to go for a walk, get a cup of coffee or just have well deserved time for oneself or as a couple. This gives you the opportunity to worship together as a family during the 10:30 service.  That worship time gives children and youth the opportunity for intergenerational community and time to worship God together.
